I made this work based on news media images and photographic archives of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The painting originates from a photograph representing the devastating tsunami that surmounted the seawall in Miyako city, Iwate prefecture, Japan on the 11th March 2011. I interweave elements of color field painting and lyrical abstraction with figuration, to create a new dialogue between photographic archives and abstract sublime.
